Having a relaxing beach-side vacation with your dog is now made possible with the myriad of staycation (portmanteau of “stay” and “vacation”) options available, especially on Sentosa island. Hotels like Amara Sanctuary Resort Sentosa and Capella Singapore both provide a great pet-friendly experience, from check-in to check-out.

We brought along our dog to review Capella Singapore, a dog-friendly resort by the beach, whilst taking a break from our regular social enterprise / dog treato work.

The Space

Set on a knoll in Sentosa, Capella Singapore features an imposing colonial outfit that is decked in white and brick-red. The decor was simple and elegant, a theme that is synonymous with the hospitality provided by the establishment.

The buildings are brilliantly contrasted with lush lawns complemented with floral landscapes, roaming peacocks, and tastefully selected sculptures. Palawan beach is a stone’s throw away from the resort grounds for a truly tropical getaway.

There are 112 rooms, suites and villas immersed in an island escape. 11 suites, 38 villas and two colonial manors. The Garden Rooms, Seaview Rooms, Constellation Rooms, and Colonial Manors, all come with a flatscreen TV, DVD player, Bose sound system, iPod dock, Nespresso coffee machine, minibar with complimentary soft drinks, juices and bottled water. Bathrooms are stocked with Aesop bathroom essentials.

Constellation rooms are decked with outdoor jacuzzis, and some offer a sea view whilst you take a dip admiring the sunset in the horizon.

For a lavish home away from home, the Colonial Manor comes with three bedrooms, arriving and departing in style in a Rolls-Royce. Your entourage will also be served with breakfast, a personal butler, groceries, laundry service, SG$500 food and drink credits a day, a 60-minute daily Auriga spa treatment for two and four hours in a luxe chauffeur-driven car per stay.

Foster + Partners imagined this space with an Indonesian designer, as earthy tones sprawl the interior with a balanced and urban vibe. Each room is a calming and relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life here in Singapore.

The Experience

From the time we arrived till the time we left, we were greeted with warmth and friendliness. It felt like we were tourists in our own city.

Once we arrived, we parked at a valet parking area at the main entrance to the hotel lobby. The hotel staff greeted us and prompted us on our reservation details, before ushering us towards some lounge seats within the check-in area. Some thirst-quenching mocktails were served almost immediately, a Capella special mix of lime, honey, and lemongrass.

The staff came to us at our seats and lowered themselves next to us to confirm the details of our stay before leading us to a buggy that would ferry us to our room. Being a dog-friendly establishment, all the staff were friendly and affectionate towards our dog.

Restaurants, pools and bars did not allow dogs within their grounds. However, you could order room service from any of the restaurants or bars to have with your furry friends in the quiet and comfort of your own room.

The room was prepped for us before we turned in for the night; lounge slippers were laid out next to each side of the bed, and a soothing floral scent filled the room to entice us into dreamland. We were ready for a good night’s rest before the next day’s activities.

The following day, we headed to Tanjong Beach Club to get some brunch and soak in some vitamin D. The beach was not too crowded as it was a weekday, and we took the chance to let Bagel run and swim about. Thereafter, we put him up at a groomer on the island near One°15 Marina Club for a clean-up before we headed back to the hotel to prepare for our check-out.

If the beach is not for you, then explore the other activities available on the resort grounds. Places of interest include a sunny, quiet library with board games and tropical drinks, and an award-winning spa to elevate your getaway. You can also engage a Capella Culturist to arrange for experiences within the resort grounds, or even request for a cocktail-making or cooking masterclass.
