BELLY UP Review Singapore's Dog-Friendly Cafes: Common Man Coffee Roasters At Martin Road

Singapore Dog-Friendly Cafe & Restaurant Review: Common Man Coffee Roasters

Disclaimer: This is an independent review and we have had no commercial relations to Common Man Coffee Roasters. Having tried thousands (yes, thousands) of cafes globally, we hope to bring you the most objective take on dog-friendly cafes and restaurants in Singapore through our adventures with our (furry) friends.

Specialty coffee roaster and cafe Common Man Coffee Roasters has become a household name to many. Beginning in 2013 at its original 22 Martin Road/Robertson Quay location, it has since set up another two outlets at Stanley St (Common Man Stan) and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Common Man Coffee Roasters Kuala Lumpur).

Common Man Coffee Roasters deserves a highlight from us, as they support the notion of giving value back to the supply chain, such as ensuring that farmers and producers get more out of each pound of coffee beans that they sell through ‘direct’ trade. This is in alignment with our support for fairly paid farmers and manufacturers in our supply chain for pet supplies.

The OG cafe at Robertson Quay may be one of the best cafes we have been to in terms of food & coffee quality & consistency. We take a look at this dog-friendly cafe and our top picks at this cosy restaurant.

The Space

This spacious cafe is pet-friendly and has a generous outdoor sheltered dining area that can accommodate diners with dogs or cats. For guests with pets, you will be required to sit outdoors, where there are twelve tables that can accommodate up to more than 40 people in total. The indoor space has been recently expanded to allow for more diners; about 60-70 by our estimation.

There is an abundance of space available outdoors, which is suitable for owners with big dogs looking for a cafe to bring their dogs along.

The Menu

Common Man Coffee Roasters serves up specialty coffee and excellent food with a quality and consistency that few places in Singapore have. The coffee is roasted by Five Senses Coffee Australia, who roasts and serves only specialty grade Arabica coffee. Specialty coffee is Arabica coffee with a cup score of 80+ points out of 100, exhibiting exquisite flavours, whilst ensuring sustainability in its production.

We had their regular coffee Iced Latte ($7.50) and Iced Mocha ($7.50), which is currently brewed using their Finca El Hato beans; tasting notes of milk chocolate and cherry, with a syrupy texture. The coffee here generally avoids the dark overtones that Singaporeans favour, similar to your kopi-o kosong, and we are fans of lighter coffees with more complex flavours and a medium body.

Common Man also serves up Filter Coffee ($6.50), Cold Brews ($8), and other beverages if you are looking for alternatives, or that G&T on a nice afternoon.

For food, the Organic Eggs Benedict ($26) and Common Man Fluffy Pancakes ($23) are some must-tries. The eggs sat on top of some really tender braised ox cheeks, and a crusty sourdough toast. Being a contender on our list of best pancakes in town, the pancake stack never fails to please our taste buds, topped off with caramelized bananas & walnuts, salted caramel sauce, nutty crumble, and berry coulis. If you still have the appetite for dessert, we recommend the Common Man Churros ($12), made fresh to order. You will not be disappointed.

The Experience

This pet-friendly cafe has been around for almost a decade, but their service never fails to get better. Bagel, our golden retriever, was served up a bowl of chilled water right from the start. The service crew assisting us also gave him some scratches and pets, which was adorable.

Common Man dishes out a unique sense of humour and vibe in this set-up, such as their “No Pets, No Smoking, No Kidding” sign at the entrance (yes, they are pet-friendly), and also the “Queueing is Common” standee to keep you entertained while you wait in line to be seated.

Over the past years we have been there, we have always come back for more, and it has become a mainstay in our list of cafes to bring our dog along.
